The Lost Age of Y'Ara - World Setting for The Gossamer Trilogy
Then during the seven hundred years war the evil Magics loosed on the world brought incomprehensible upheaval, and unspeakable destruction, which changed the face of the landscape forever. The area that is now North Oberlaen was thrust upwards at least 2000 feet, creating the rugged hills of Cedarbough Rise and Gnomes Rise. It created the 3000-foot deep gorge of the Canyon of Lost Souls, and left in its wake the vast 2000-foot vertical wall of Land's End that stretches between Gnomes Rise and the immense mountain range called the Pillars of the Sky. The peaks of this range are so high and rugged, it is difficult for the mind to comprehend their unconquerable bulk and incomparable majestic beauty. The Great Cataclysm also created the Eastern and Western Royalmanes, stretching from Falderia into southern Nazmiria, as well as the Eaglerift and Faerystag Mountains of Falderia, and the Far Fae Hills of eastern Mouhdar. The Seven Steppes were thrust violently upward from the Pamjora Plain. The Senyasotka and Senyasobba barrens were also once part of the vast Y'Ara forest, but were so scorched in the war that they no longer will support any but the hardiest scrub plants. With the rich topsoil gone, great deposits of minerals, various types of semi-precious stone and ores were revealed in these two otherwise harsh, dry, barren regions. The great diagonal monolith stones that permeate the region now known as Dunn Vassar are quite likely a remnant of the devastation of the great war. They certainly are not the left-over stones of giant castles from the so-called War of the Giants, as told now in myths and tales of the region. As for the great Darmori Desert of Sunjah Saar, its origins and existance may well have preceeded the Great Cataclysm. Yet, it is believed it expanded westward because of those horrendous events, which include the creation of the huge volcano known as Bertonajirma, and the insuing destruction that event brought to the immediate area. Through many millenia which have since passed, its presence has continued to affect southwestern Sunjah Saar, including the recorded eruption of 2000 years ago which destroyed the nearby ancient city of Abbaxandui.
